DNA profiling and DNA profile interpretation can be a complex and somewhat daunting subject and it is often difficult to see the wood for the trees:

In his capacity as a DNA expert, Jonathan will seek to address three main questions which pertain to most forensic cases involving DNA evidence:

1) Whose DNA is it?

2) How did the DNA get there?

3) Has the DNA profile result been reported in a fair and balanced way?

On your instruction, and on a case by case basis, Jonathan will perform an independent interpretation of the DNA profiling results and consider the following relevant points to ensure that any conclusions reached regarding the evidence, in relation to these questions,  are robust and reliable and stand up to expert scrutiny.

Whose DNA is it? How did the DNA get there? Has the DNA profile been reported in a fair and balanced way?
Has the DNA profile been interpreted correctly? Issues relating to the time of deposition of the DNA profile: addressing ‘when’ the DNA was deposited Does the work fully address the relevant issues?
Do Low Template DNA issues apply? Issues of DNA transfer: addressing ‘how’ the DNA got there Does the report consider both the prosecution and the defence alternatives?
Do the DNA profiles match? Issues of DNA persistence: addressing ‘how’ long the DNA has been there Have any limitations been clearly explained?
Has the DNA profile been attributed to a body fluid? Have different DNA transfer scenarios been proposed and evaluated? Have the scientific methods used been appropriately validated?
Has the DNA profile been evaluated correctly either statistically or subjectively? Are the conclusions robust and reliable and reported in the context of the case circumstances?
