Iain is a nationally renowned fire investigation expert with a wealth of experience in scene and laboratory-based fire and explosion investigations.
Iain graduated from university with a Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences and a Masters degree in Forensic Science. He joined the Forensic Science Service in 1998 working in the DNA Unit and transferring to the Fire Investigation Unit in 2000, becoming a Senior Reporting Officer specialising in fire investigation and related examinations.
Iain has examined a wide range of fire scenes, principally to establish where, how and when the fire started. Each investigation is independent and follows a structured process to ensure that all possibilities have been considered. He has extensive knowledge and experience of investigating deflagrations such as mains gas and flammable liquid vapour explosions, including those incidents associated with LPG cylinders. He has been the lead forensic investigator in many high profile complex cases such as the Hackney Siege, the Cutty Sark fire and the Tottenham Riots.
Iain is also experienced in dealing with international Police forces including casework, training and presenting evidence at court.
Iain has given evidence as an expert witness in Crown and Coroners Courts on many occasions.
He was head of training for fire investigation within the Forensic Science Service and designed, presented and coordinated specialised fire investigation training courses to a number of Police forces. He also trained and mentored new fire investigators in the FSS.
He was an Assessor for the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners.
Iain is also experienced in supervising research projects. He continues this interest in research as a Director of Prometheus Forensic Services by collaborating with the University of Greenwich, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (Fire Investigation and Research Team) and SLR Forensics Ltd.
In founding Prometheus Forensic Services (www.prometheus-fs.co.uk), Iain continues to provide an impartial and balanced expert opinion on the cause and origin of fires and a thorough and robust investigation of materials related to fires and explosions.
